TAIWAN STUDIES WORKSHOP: ATAYAL RECONSTRUCTION AND SUBGROUPING

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2021, 9:00 AM (PDT)

Presented by the Center for Taiwan Studies.

Atayal is an indigenous language of Taiwan belonging to the Austronesian language family, comprising seven distinct dialects. Andre Goderich, of the National Changhua University of Education in Taiwan, will present a reconstruction of the Proto-Atayal language, a subgrouping of Atayal dialects.

Atayal presents a unique challenge due to a gender register system, where men and women would use different words for the same concept. The system has collapsed in all dialects but one, fossilizing in unpredictable ways and obscuring cognate relationships.

This virtual event is free, but prior registration is required.
