The Division of Humanities and Fine Arts and the UCSB Art, Design & Architecture (AD&A) Museum is pleased to welcome Gabriel Ritter as the AD&A Museum’s new Director. Ritter comes to us from the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), where he has been Curator and Head of Contemporary Art since 2016. Prior to working at Mia, Ritter held curatorial positions at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. He has curated a large number of influential exhibitions, with an emphasis on the work of emerging and underrepresented artists from the US, Europe, and Asia. With a doctorate from UCLA, Ritter’s areas of expertise include Museum Studies and Japanese modern and contemporary art, about which he has written extensively. He will begin his tenure as Director of the AD&A Museum and will join the faculty of the Department of History of Art and Architecture this fall.

The Museum would like to express gratitude and recognize the excellence with which Acting Director Silvia Perea has contributed her energies and expertise over the course of the last two years, particularly with the challenges that the pandemic has posed.

The AD&A Museum has reopened for fall, and is currently welcoming visitors during its regular hours: Wednesday through Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and all visitors are required to wear face coverings in the museum galleries.
