A state-funded building complex at the University of California, Santa Barbara, broke ground in 2005. It will become the new home of the drama and dance programs of the Department of Dramatic Art. This building will be a central part of a renovated Arts District on campus.

The Department of Dramatic Art which includes both Drama and Dance, plays an important role in the intellectual and artistic life of UC Santa Barbara. Scholars and professional artists in Acting, Directing, Design, Choreography, Dance, and Theatre Studies work together in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Our programs in Acting and Dance provide a conservatory training within a liberal arts context, involving students in productions throughout the year. Many of these actors and dancers have gone on to successful careers in the performing arts.

With more than 300 undergraduate majors and graduate students, the department offers a balance of scholarship and practical training in all aspects of theater and performance. While enriching their background in theater and the liberal arts, students can specialize in areas such as dramatic literature, theory and history, acting, directing, dance, technical theater, costume, lighting and scenic design, playwriting, and theater management.

This Department is dedicated to developing innovative programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse student population, to use theater to introduce students to different aspects of our global culture, and to create works of the imagination that reflect and contribute toward the constantly changing society of California.

Leadership Gift Opportunities and Recognition
UC Santa Barbara has embarked on a multimillion dollar development effort to meet capital and program needs. Private philanthropy is needed to realize the vision of the department for its teaching and creative projects. Our highest priority is to secure $3 million for immediate capital needs to fully fund the Department’s new home, a multifaceted teaching, research, performance, and assembly space that includes:

  • 150-seat Auditorium and Performance Space
  • Drama and Dance Studio Suite with Dance, Acting, and Movement Studios
  • State-of-the-art Design Studio
  • Renovation of the existing 300-seat Hatlen Theater
  • Multi-use Conference and Teaching Room
  • Lobby and Reception Space linking Hatlen Theater to the new building
  • Outdoor Courtyard and Amphitheater Space

Building a Space for Creativity: The New Drama and Dance Complex
The new Drama and Dance building will be the home for the educational and creative activities of the Department of Dramatic Art. The new building will provide state-of-the-art labs and classrooms for education, research, performance, and production. Students will use these facilities to create their projects for performance in our different theater venues.

With the successful completion of this new building, the Department of Dramatic Art will be firmly established as an important center for research, education, and training in theater and dance in the University of California and in the country.
