STARDUST
Edward Cella Art and Architecture, Santa Barbara
Nov 6 - Dec 28, 2008
Opening: Thursday, November 6th, 5-8 pm
Realized in collaboration with the Art Center College of Design and the NASA Spitzer Science Center at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena; Stardust considers the physical and and spatial relationships of distant stars and the various forces that bind them. George Legrady, Professor of Art and Media Arts and Technology at UC Santa Barbara, contextualizes this vast expanse of information by visualizing its inherent ephemeral nature and profundity.
Stardust is a limited edition portfolio of works on paper created in software that allows for the 3-D visualization of the positioning of deep-space objects in spatial relation to each other using the archive of locations of celestial bodies studies by NASA scientists through the infra-red Spitzer Orbiting Telescope. These original artworks are the outcome of research for an installation entitled, "We are Stardust, on view concurrently in the exhibition entitled Observe at the Alyce de Roulet Williamston Gallery at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Organized through the science, knowledge, and technology resources of the Spitzer Science Center at California Institute of Technology, the exhibition opens new and innovative doorways to the subject of astronomy and its implications for humanity with the goal to engage new audiences and forge new perceptions by reaching across the disciplines of art and science.
