UC SANTA BARBARA -- UTRECHT UNIVERSITY EXCHANGE

The Exchange Program
The Humanities and Fine Arts in the College of Letters and Science at UC Santa Barbara in collaboration with the Humanities at Utrecht University have designed a faculty exchange program to enhance the spirit of intellectual cooperation and mutual international understanding between their respective faculty through regular contacts and joint programs of research and academic exchange. The initial three-year program began in the 2008-2009 academic year.

Humanites and Arts faculty from UC Santa Barbara will be selected each year to teach a three month term at Utrecht University while faculty from Utrecht teach at UCSB (usually the spring quarter). Modes of collaboration during the period of exchange will include the exchange of ladder faculty or post-doctoral fellows for the purpose of teaching, the organization of joint colloquia, seminars and conferences, and the development of joint research projects.

The Faculty of the Humanities at Utrecht University includes programs in History and Art History, Theology, Media and Cultural Studies, Dutch, Modern Languages, and Philosophy, as well as a Centre for Humanities, the Research Institute for Theology and Religious Studies, the Research Institute for History and Culture, and the ZENO Research Institute for Philosophy. All courses at the Master's level may be taught in English. For more information, visit: http://www.uu.nl/en/library/igitur/archive/student/humanities/Pages/default.aspx.

Teaching assignments for UCSB faculty members visiting Utrecht will be determined by the chair of the relevant academic department at Utrecht University, and teaching assignments for Utrecht University faculty members visiting UCSB will be determined by the chair of the relevant academic department at UCSB. A UCSB department will not automatically receive an exchange faculty member from Utrecht or course replacement if one of their department faculty is selected to teach at Utrecht. Final decisions concerning specific exchanges will require approval of department chairs and deans of the respective faculty.

Award Process
The exchange program allows for faculty or post-doctoral fellows from either university to visit and to teach as a Visiting Scholar or Researcher at the host institution while continuing to receive salary and benefits from their home university. Each institution will provide their faculty with a stipend for travel to the host university. A housing stipend will be provided by the host university to the visiting scholar to help offset the cost of housing and living expenses during the period of exchange. The Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at UCSB provides his faculty with a $2,000 travel stipend. The Dean of Humanities at Utrecht provides his faculty with a travel stipend and a €5000 housing stipend to arriving UCSB faculty.

The host department will help facilitate the location of housing for the visiting faculty or will put the visiting faculty in touch with the campus Housing Office of the host institution. However, participants are ultimately responsible for securing their own housing while participating in the exchange. When possible, the host institution will provide appropriate working space and access to library, computer, and related facilities. UCSB and UU will facilitate the acquisition of the appropriate visas for participants from each institution, in case such documents are needed. However, participants will be responsible for obtaining required visas and documents in compliance with all relevant visa requirements and immigration laws.

Application Process
UCSB faculty in the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts are invited to apply for a one-quarter exchange, (normally for the Spring Quarter), in which faculty will teach a normal course load in Utrecht, paired with a visit at UCSB from a faculty member from Utrecht. Interested faculty should consult with their Department Chair and with Professor Ann Jensen Adams [ajadams@arthistory.ucsb.edu], the UCSB liaison for this program. Applicants should submit: a description of their plans for the exchange, including the courses that the faculty would teach; if applicable, a description of the collaborative research project; a brief explanation of how the proposed exchange would advance the department and/or Division; a letter from the Chair endorsing the proposed exchange; and a cv. Only one exchange per year can be authorized. Please contact: Kim Coonen, Division of Humanities and Fine Arts, College of Letters and Science, for the 2009-2010 academic year. Applications are due June 10, 2009.
